I was late on reading I,Vampire, but I caught up and it was really cool. Honestly, the whole comic could be fine without words, the art is so elegant
I agree (even though the writing is outstanding as well), it’s just jaw-droppingly magnificent, it fits the tone ridiculously well. I remember being blown away back when I checked out #1 in September and I was a fool for not continuing the series… still need to pick up issues 6-8.
Layout “pencils” and finished artwork, drawn directly overtop. The original plot called for Stephanie Brown to be Batgirl, but production delays and the DC 52 reboot caused an editorial decision to change to Spoiler. Layouts were drawn featuring the Spoiler costume but by the time final artwork was underway, the decision was made to revert to Batgirl. (Artwork from Batman Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes, 2011)
8 months in, many of our fears and hopes regarding the New 52 have been confirmed, or in some cases, are still a mystery. I’ve made it no secret I enjoy current DC more than most people. After all, I’m an optimist and I’ll read it if it’s good and lots of titles have been impressing me. But as much as I can fanboy over it all, you can’t deny there’s some glaring issues that need to be adressed and/or changed…
Wally West. Donna Troy. Vic Sage. Ted Kord. Renee Montoya. Doctor Fate. Aqualad. Catman. Scandal Savage. Ragdoll. Ray Palmer. Where are they? Now we’ve been promised we’ll see some characters soon like Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, The Spectre, Ryan Choi, Hawkgirl, etc., and they’ve said just because we haven’t seen them yet doesn’t mean they won’t appear. But the question is… why not just confirm they exist? Why not have them share one quick scene in one of their books? It’s not that hard.
CLEAR UP THE CONTINUITY
I’m a huge proponent of “continuity can be overlooked in favor of good storytelling”, but it’s hard to ignore when they’re constantly making me do spit-takes when I get stuff like “I wasn’t the Red Hood a year ago” shoved in my face constantly. It doesn’t make sense, they thought they fixed the timeline but they only made it more confusing. Just tell us what’s canon and what’s not. If it’s not a priority, that’s okay, but don’t give us specific dates for specific events and make us scratch our heads. If they put out a oneshot and all it was was simply a timeline of events, I’d buy it. That may be what these new issue #0’s in September will be, but we’ll see. I want this cleared up.
TWEAK SOME COSTUMES
I do also like more of the current costumes than most people do. Heck, to use Superman as an example, I really dig his current look. But I’d tone down the level of detail on some of them. I get that it’s armor, but I could live without so many lines on his suit. I like Red Robin’s, but most people don’t so maybe give him a standard cape. Kid Flash is the same way for me, but I wish he didn’t have red eyes. Just little changes here and there, I think the iconic feel to many of these characters has suffered a little and I miss that.
BATMAN’S TIMELINE IS TOO COMPRESSED
We all thought that maybe DC was going for the whole “Batman operated for 5 years before any other hero, making his history 10 years long in present-time”, but apparently he’s only been around for 6 years. It’s unclear, but I think anything less than 10 years doesn’t make sense, since 99% of all Batman canon is still intact. I’d give 4-5 years for Dick as Robin, 1 year of Jason as Robin, 3-4 years of Tim as Robin, and 1-2 years of Damian give or take. I mean, so much has happened in Gotham, and there’s no way anyone would live there if so much has happened in 5/6 years. I also like the idea of Superman being the first PUBLICLY KNOWN hero, but Batman being the most experienced, having operated in the shadows years before. Then again, Dick interacted with other heroes like Superman during his time as Robin and… YOU SEE?! THIS TIMELINE DOESN’T WORK.
MORE FUN, LESS DARKNESS
Now there ARE titles I get a good amount of lightheartedness in titles like Red Hood and the Outlaws, Aquaman, or Teen Titans, and there’s other titles that have a balance like Action Comics, Nightwing, and Flash, and then there’s others that are just depressingly dark. Now, there’s nothing wrong with dark comics, it can be quite fantastic if done right (LIKE IN SCOTT SNYDER’S BATMAN, LEMIRE’S ANIMAL MAN, I VAMPIRE!!!!!), but sometimes I just want comics to make me feel happy. DC’s not the only one guilty of this, but the New 52 has brought more of it, and I’d like to see more innocent optimism in my comics.
DON’T CANCEL SO MANY COMICS (AND DON’T REPLACE THEM WITH COMICS THAT ARE JUST AS LIKELY TO FAIL, IF NOT, MORE)
I mean, really… even DC’s worst-selling titles are selling better than most non-DC books right now. DC, you’re really dominating the market right now. I thought the point of cancelling comics was because of LACK of success? Just give them a chance… and when I heard Men of War was being cancelled in favor of a book called GI COMBAT, I facepalmed. What makes them think GI Combat will do any better????
TREAT FEMALE CHARACTERS BETTER
Now, I think people have really been overreacting to percieved sexism in DC right now, but they still have a point amnd it is an issue. Panels like the one above are not necessary. Ever. I’m not a 13 year old, I don’t need this stuff shoved in my face and I don’t want to have to look behind me when reading comics in fear a friend or family member is seeing what’s on these panels. But even disregarding my opinion, you can’t deny there are HUNDREDS of female fans who want this to stop. Just make it stop. It’s not that hard. Editorial should crack down on this stuff and just simply do what the fans are asking.
CHANGE THE CREATIVE TEAMS AND TITLE LINEUP A BIT HERE AND THERE
This doesn’t even just apply to current DC, I think there’s always a time when creative teams need changing and titles need to be replaced, added, or subtracted. I think we don’t need the Dark Knight series. The other Bat-Books all have valid reasons to exist, but not this one. Kick Tony Daniel off of Detective and just put their upcoming Dark Knight team on there instead, since it’ll probably be good. Superman and Grifter are in DESPERATE need of better writers/artists. We need a secondary Flash book starring Wally West and other speedsters. Secret Six needs to return. Y’know, just stuff we love.
… The way artists keep butchering Nightwing and Green Arrow’s masks pisses me off. And y’know Superman’s indestructible armor? It’s been punctured twice already. Why do so few writers know what’s going on continuity-wise? I think all writers/artists/editors should be in the loop so stupid little inconsistencies don’t happen. We’re just starting off this new universe, I’d hate to see how this stuff is 5 years down the line.
Now there you have it. Some things that have been on my mind for the past 8 months that have been bothering me about DC’s relaunch. Just because I didn’t list it doesn’t mean I don’t have a problem with it, these are just ones I can naem off the top of my head.
